Study Highlights Pros, Cons of Workplace Augmentation-Based AI Tools

March 13, 2025

Augmentation-based AI tools are transforming the workplace by enhancing learning and performance, but they also pose challenges like information overload. Discover the key findings from a recent study.

In a recent study published in the Journal of Management, researchers Yiduo Shao, Chengquan Huang, Yifan Song, Mo Wang, and Ruodan Shao investigated the daily effects of using augmentation-based artificial intelligence (AI) tools in the workplace. The study, "A Review of Artificial Intelligence, Algorithms, and Robots Through the Lens of Stakeholder Theory, Using Augmentation-Based AI Tool at Work: A Daily Investigation of Learning-Based Benefit and Challenge," analyzes how AI tools influence employees' learning and performance.

Study Findings

Knowledge Gain and Task Performance

The study found that frequent use of augmentation-based AI tools during the workday is associated with significant knowledge gain. Employees who regularly interacted with AI tools reported better understanding and assimilation of job-related information, which in turn enhanced their task performance. This highlights the potential of AI tools to serve as valuable learning resources in the workplace.

Information Overload

Despite the benefits, the study also identified a downside to frequent AI tool usage—information overload. Employees experienced cognitive strain due to the constant influx of information provided by AI, which impaired their performance and hindered their ability to recover after work. This underscores the importance of managing the cognitive load associated with AI tools to prevent burnout and maintain productivity.

Moderating Factors

The researchers explored how individual differences, such as openness to experience and positive affect, influenced the impact of AI tool usage. They found that employees with higher openness to experience were better able to manage information overload, while those with positive affect in the morning experienced greater knowledge gain throughout the day. These findings suggest that personal traits can play a crucial role in optimizing the use of AI tools.

AI Work Implications

Training and User-Centered Design

Companies eager to integrate AI tools into their workflows should consider both the benefits and challenges highlighted by this study. Providing training to help employees effectively manage information and leveraging individual differences can enhance the positive impacts of AI augmentation. Additionally, designing user-friendly AI interfaces that minimize cognitive load can further support employee well-being and performance.

Balancing Benefits and Challenges

The study by Shao et al. (2024) offers a comprehensive look at the dual nature of AI augmentation in the workplace. While AI tools can significantly enhance learning and performance, they also pose challenges that need to be carefully managed. By understanding these dynamics, organizations can better harness the power of AI to create a more productive and supportive work environment.
