STACK Cybersecurity's Registered Apprenticeship Program
April 26, 2025
As National Apprenticeship Day approaches on April 30, 2025, STACK Cybersecurity proudly reflects on our registered apprenticeship program and the remarkable journey of our inaugural cybersecurity apprentice. The U.S. Department of Labor approved our groundbreaking program in January 2025, marking a significant milestone in workforce development for Michigan's cybersecurity sector.
Michigan's First MSP-Hosted Cybersecurity Apprenticeship
STACK Cybersecurity has established itself as a pioneer in the industry by becoming the first Managed Service Provider (MSP) in Michigan to host a registered cybersecurity apprenticeship program. This comprehensive two-year curriculum combines:
- Hands-on dispatcher experience
- Technical shadowing with seasoned professionals
- Structured related instruction
- Self-paced learning through established platforms like LinkedIn Learning and OffSec
Our competency-based approach ensures apprentices develop proficiency in help desk support, system administration, and network troubleshooting. This creates a solid foundation for effective incident response in cybersecurity environments.
Funding and Support
STACK Cybersecurity's commitment to developing a skilled workforce is further supported by funding from the Going PRO Talent Fund and participation in the Michigan Statewide Targeted Apprenticeship Inclusion and Readiness System (MiSTAIRS) initiative. These programs aim to expand apprenticeship opportunities, particularly for underrepresented populations, by providing access to education and training that lead to high-skill, high-wage careers.
These initiatives have been instrumental in establishing pathways to high-skill, high-wage careers in the cybersecurity field. While these taxable grants have offset some of our investment, we've committed significant resources to ensure our program's success. The costs associated with training, subscriptions, hardware, mentorship, and other resources represent a substantial investment, especially for a small business.
We want to host more cybersecurity apprentices, but it doesn’t make financial sense at this time. We hope to find more funding opportunities to offset the significant costs associated with running the immersive program we’ve built.
Alignment with Federal Workforce Initiatives
Our apprenticeship program aligns perfectly with recent federal priorities outlined in the Executive Order on Workforce Development signed April 23, 2025. This order emphasizes:
- Maximizing investments in America's economic growth
- Equipping workers with skills to implement cutting-edge technologies
- Streamlining fragmented workforce development programs
- Preparing Americans for secure, well-paying jobs
The Executive Order directs the Secretaries of Labor, Commerce, and Education to review federal workforce programs and identify strategies to integrate systems, realign resources, and invest in upskilling workers to meet rapidly evolving skill demands—particularly in areas like artificial intelligence.
Integrating AI Skills for Future-Ready Professionals
The companion Executive Order on Artificial Intelligence Education (also signed April 23, 2025) further reinforces the importance of developing AI literacy and proficiency among American workers. By incorporating AI concepts and tools into our apprenticeship curriculum, we're preparing our participants to:
- Understand AI systems and their applications in cybersecurity
- Leverage AI tools for threat detection and analysis
- Develop adaptable skills for an increasingly digital workplace
- Position themselves as leaders in an AI-driven future
The AI Executive Order specifically directs the Secretary of Labor to increase participation in AI-related Registered Apprenticeships by developing these programs across industries. STACK Cybersecurity is positioned to benefit from these initiatives through access to additional resources and support as we continue to innovate in cybersecurity training.
Expanding the Apprenticeship Model Beyond Traditional Trades
As we commemorate National Apprentice Day, we emphasize the value of apprenticeships beyond traditional trades. Our program demonstrates that the apprenticeship model works exceptionally well for white-collar professions like cybersecurity, offering:
- Practical, hands-on experience with real-world applications
- Mentorship from industry professionals
- Structured skill development with clear progression
- Earning while learning without accumulating student debt
By offering this non-traditional apprenticeship model for non-traditional learners and technicians, we hope to inspire other small businesses to create similar opportunities and contribute to building a more diverse, skilled workforce in Michigan and beyond.
Join Us in Celebrating National Apprentice Day
We invite our colleagues, clients, and the wider business community to join us in celebrating STACK Cybersecurity's innovative apprentice program on National Apprentice Day. Together, we're creating pathways for future cybersecurity professionals and strengthening the foundation of our industry.
